CHROME CHEVY ALTERNATOR / 120 AMP V BELT. GM Style Chrome 120 Amp 1 or 3 Wire Alternator. New chrome finish GM style 120 amp alternator. This is a 1 or 3 wire hookup piece with internal voltage regulator. Will allow you to replace earlier alternators, allowing you to toss the external regulator and greatly simplifying your wiring. Only requires 1 wire going to the battery. Billet aluminum 1 groove v-belt pulley. This alternator may be used on OE GM applications that use a three wire hook up or as a one wire hook up for applications that do not use the conventional hook up. The 10SI internal regulator alt came into use around 1973. It was the first year for the internal voltage regulator.

One heavy duty wire went to the back of the alt. This wire usually came directly from the battery. The other wire had two spade terminals, and plugged into the side of the alternator case. This two wire plug is not on cars prior to 1973, but this alt may be used without this, and hooked up with just the one wire to the back of the alt.

The alt then becomes a one wire alt, and will operate just fine. No external voltage regulator is needed. This alt has a voltage exiting device built into it, allowing it to operate with just one wire hooked up to it.

You can see the side plug clearly in the picture above. There is a black rubber blanking plug in it.

That can stay just as it is when used on pre-1973 vehicles. You can also see the threaded shaft, (notice red insulator washer) with a nut on it where the single heavy duty, (10 gauge) wire would hook up to on the back of the alt in several of the pics. It's on the back side of the alt. The alternator used prior to 1973 was considered an external regulator unit, but our 10SI unit may be used in its place. The early style alt had the identical mounting specs.

The case was actually the same as the 10SI alt. This allows this unit to bolt right in place of the early style ext. Dimensions are the same on the early unit and the later 10SI.

You now can get rid of a huge amount of wire and the ext. Fender well mounted regulator on your pre-1973 vehicle, and run one simple wire down the back side of the alt to the battery, out of sight, clean looking.

The chrome finish on this alternator is much better than some of the others we have seen on the market, but it is not flawless, as some people seem to expect it to be. You will not find any brand of chrome plated alternator on the market to have a perfect finish in every area of the case.

Expecting the finish to be perfect in every nook, cranny, crack and crevice is unreasonable. Once mounted on the engine, the appearance from two or three feet away is what we consider excellent. You must understand that these and all other chrome plated alts on the market start out with a rough cast aluminum housing that has been polished down smooth, then chrome plated, and polished once more. This process is very labor intensive. It's near impossible to make this type of item perfect in every area. Considering its overall shape, we find the finish to be very good, all things considered. Chrome plated items made from a cnc'd billet piece of aluminum will usually come out better, but this alternator is not produced that way.

Considering the price of this alternator, an absolutely flawless finish is not to be expected. Overall, we consider the finish to be decent. Please be reasonable in your expectations. Clean the surface with a household cleaner before installation.
